The cottage was built in about 1865 on one of the first settled properties in this part of the Hawkesbury River.It was originally owned by James Singleton who,with his brother Benjamin Singleton, operated the biggest tidle mill on the river from the 1830's onwards. Singletons Mill supplied flour grown from the local area which was taken by sail ship to Sydney Cove.

The area is steeped in the history of Australia's early settlers, it's convict history and of the local indigenous custodians of the land.

Singletons Retreat is set in private and secluded surroundings with waterfront access from its doorstep. It is on 40acres of arable to natural bushland and adjoins Marramarra National park making it ideal for bushwalkers, birdwatchers and naturalists.

Sentry Box Reach is considered to be one of the finest fishing locations on the Hawkesbury river.
